Citizens across Illinois are invited to give written budget recommendations to Gov. Quinn concerning the FY 2011 state budget. Through March 10, you can submit solutions online and get information about the FY 2010 budget and FY 2011 revenue. We need early childhood advocates like you to post comments that ask the state to prioritize investments in early learning programs. The Illinois Association for the Education of Young Children suggests keeping the following in mind when posting your concerns:
· The state’s budget must maintain current investments in early learning programs — one of the smartest, most effective ways to rebuild our state economy and safeguard its long-term economic health.
· Economists agree that every $1 spent on early childhood programs for at-risk children yields $7 to $9 in future savings.
· Include the words “early childhood” in your opening sentence.
· Keep it short and to the point.
· Use early childhood research to make your case.
· Limit personal stories to specific points that are relevant.
· Avoid name-calling, personal attacks, recriminations, etc.
